Please Welcome Canadian Composer/Arranger, Beth Emmers.

She has arranged many hymns for her church choirs over the years, and has composed many solos, choral and small group pieces, instilling a unique mix of styles, while keeping an inspired tone.

A couple of highlights in Beth’s musical career include: Winning 2nd place at Provincials in 1997 for her song ‘Prima Vista’, ‘Lullaby for Baby Joseph’ performed at BYU’s Joseph Smith Birthday Celebration (2005); and winning 2nd place in the Your LDS Sheet Music Contest, (Contemporary Christian Category 2013) for her song ‘He Loves Me’.

She is the mother of 4 beautiful girls and has a fantastic, supportive husband who has written many lyrics for Beth’s songs over the years, including award winning ‘He Loves Me’. They currently live in Manitoba, Canada.

Please take a moment to check out her beautiful Christmas piece, “One Star” for SATB Choir, Piano and Flute.  You’ll love Beth’s sensitivity to melody.  Here’s a link to:  One Star

HolySheetMusic is pleased to have composer, Douglas Pew, join the family of composers and arrangers.

We are excited to release two Christmas pieces by Douglas Pew:  “Bethlehem” for SATB and Oboe (or Flute) and “Wondery”, an SATB Christmas Hymn.

Here’s more about Doug:

American composer Douglas Pew (b. 1980) is noted for his ability to strike at the root of the emotional world through his music “with a showman’s touch and a poet’s soul” (Jake Heggie). His music has been heralded as “stunning…magical” (Washington Times) and “sensual, other-worldly, expressive and showcasing a rich harmonic pallet, sure to connect with audiences, while saying something fresh, profound and meaningful” (Scott Holden, pianist).

Douglas and librettist Dara Weiberg will have their newly commissioned one-act opera, “Penny”, premiered at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The work was commissioned by Washington National Opera and will be performed by the WNO’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists as a part of the American Opera Initiative. Joining the production team is Manitoba Chamber Orchestra Music Director, Anne Manson, and Shakespeare Theater Company in Washington D.C. Associate Director, Alan Paul. In preparation for the premiere, “Penny” will be workshopped in the summer of 2014 at the Glimmerglass Opera Festival.

Pew and Weinberg’s first opera, “A Game of Hearts” was similarly commissioned by Washington National Opera. After it’s premiere at the Kennedy Center in 2012 and subsequent performance by the NANOWorks Opera Company in Cincinnati, OH, it was selected for performance at the 2014 Opera America New Works Forum in New York City.

Additionally, Douglas has received commissions and performances from ensembles such as the Cincinnati Bach Ensemble, Polish Chamber Choir, Atlanta Opera, Miami University Men’s Glee Club, and the Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has received multiple awards including a Barlow Endowment commission, 1st prize in the 2009 SCI/ASCAP Student Composers Commission Competition, Musica Sacra International Choral Composition Competition in Poland, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award, Susan and For Schumann Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival, and the Tangeman Sacred Music Center.

A product of Brigham Young University’s Music Media program, Tyler studied songwriting, film scoring and music business, and was named the Outstanding Media Music student in 1994. Please welcome Matthew B. Nielsen to HolySheetMusic.com

Headshot 1

Matthew B. Nielsen – Composer/Arranger

Matthew B. Nielsen, Composer/Arranger is now part of HolySheetMusic.com

HolySheetMusic is publishing is wonderful arrangement of “Away in a Manger” for SSA choir with soloists and optional instruments.

Matthew writes:  “One of my favorite musical inventions of the 21st century is the “mash-up.”  Used mostly in popular music styles, the general idea of the technique is to take two or more songs and combine them, intertwining their musical themes and rhythmic ideas to create new musical ideas.  I enjoy using this pop music technique in my works for the concert hall.  In this piece, you’ll hear this used mostly in the second verse. While the sopranos sing the melody, the altos sing an altered version of the hymn “The Lord Is My Shepherd” as a counter melody.  Meanwhile, the accompaniment borrows from “Joseph Dear, Oh Joseph Mine,” “The Wexford Carol,” and “Mary’s Lullaby.” Combined with the “Coventry Carol” transition between the first and second verses, there are five different songs and carols that will be heard.

While the piano accompaniment illustrates the musical borrowing, the pastoral nature of this setting is best heard when using the instrumental accompaniment. The original arrangement is scored for flute, oboe, guitar, and piano. The parts are included here, with an alternate piano/vocal score for when the instruments are being utilized. Feel free to use any C instrument that works for your choir. The guitar is optional, but I highly recommend it, as it really adds to the overall sound.”

Here’s a little about Matthew:

Matthew B. Nielsen has arranged for choir, concert band, marching band and orchestra.  His arrangements have been performed by collegiate choirs and show choirs across the country, as well as at internationally through youth festivals and training broadcasts. Matthew is also an avid performer, playing percussion and singing for church and theatrical productions in the United States, China, Australia, and the Caribbean.

Matthew is a graduate of Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s degree in Media Music.  A native Californian, Matthew now resides in Minnesota with his wife and four children.

Janice Kapp Perry presenting at Education Week

Education Week – 2014

Things get pretty crazy around our house about the third week in August each year as my long-time friend, pianist Marvin Goldstein, arrives a couple of days early for BYU’s Education Week, moves into our guest room, and we start preparing for the four classes we present in the DeJong Concert Hall each year. This has been our ritual for over a decade. His living in Florida isn’t really conducive to our practicing and planning together ahead of time but he’s a pretty spontaneous guy anyway, and somehow it all works out. He also brings his singer with whom he does other classes, Vanessa Joy, and this place sounds like a piano practice hall all week!

Marvin is half Victor Borge and half Liberace and the Ed Week audiences love him, pure and simple. During my part of our class I roast Marvin with material I have collected for years, and the attendees love that too. I love doing it and I think it is part of keeping the hall filled each year. We do sessions about the charm of children’s music, finding and developing new talents, songs from my latest album (new words to old tunes) and the lighter side of music. One day I had the audience sing along on a medley of six of my Primary songs, which seems to bring the spirit instantly. In Marvin’s part he plays gorgeous piano medleys of these same songs. I brought singers in from my most recent album (Tammy Robinson and Keith Evans) and they worked their magic on the audience nicely.

For the talents section I bravely stood out at the front of stage–a place I never like to be–and sang “Livin’ My Dream” a light-hearted song about having the courage to do the things your heart yearns to do. Marvin and I sprinkled some of our sessions with comedic new words to Primary songs. We feel that the mixture of humor and touching music is a magical combination.

We just pulled out all the stops in our last session on the lighter side of music, doing mostly lighter (and sometimes silly) music but ending with something spiritual and memorable. Marvin is one of greatest entertainers I know and though I roast him mercilessly, I love and admire him, and am honored to perform with him. So far they keep inviting us back . . .
