Janice Kapp Perry – Composer/Arranger
JANICE KAPP PERRY and DAVID ZABRISKIE’S first collaborative project: “When Saints Unite to Sing God’s Praise.”
Janice Kapp Perry writes:
I had the great blessing of singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City
for 5 1/2 years–one of the most glorious musical experiences I could ever have imagined.
The first time I sang “Battle Hymn of the Republic” surrounded by so many magnificent voices,
I was too overwhelmed to sing! Later as the choir sang a few of my children’s songs on the
weekly broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word, I felt doubly blessed. Tours within the U.S.
and in several foreign countries added to my joy.
Every choir member must retire at age 60, no exceptions, and when that day came for me it was
difficult. One of the sweetest parts of singing in the choir is the warm relationships that are formed
with other choir members as we unite our voices in singing praises to God. I searched for a fitting
gift to give to choir members as I left the fold, and my heart told me to write a hymn that would
express my feelings as a member of the choir. I prayed for just the right words to convey my
deepest emotions and the inspiration came during one quiet Sunday afternoon.
When the hymn was done I asked our conductor, Dr. Jerrold Ottley, if I might have permission
to insert a copy in the each member’s music box. After examining the hymn he told me he
would like the choir to perform it on my final broadcast. I was humbled and overjoyed!
It seemed the perfect ending to my choir experience.
I deeply appreciate Dave Zabriskie who has now created a beautiful choral arrangement of
my hymn.
