Halloween Eve – Children’s Novelty Song
Halloween Eve with music by Kathleen Holyoak, is a fun but spooky novelty song written for children and adults as they prepare for that special evening of “trick or treating”. Guitar chords for instrumental accompaniment are included with clever lyrics by Gary Croxall as follows:
Oh, it’s Halloween eve and believers believe
In witches and goblins galore.
The wind blows a tune, while a big yellow moon
Grins at tots as they troop door-to-door.
You’ll see midnight black cats, eerie hovering bats,
Scary masks that will give you a fright.
Your knees will grow weak when you hear a ghost shriek

King of Little Children, The
Master hymn-text writer, John V. Pearson, collaborated with well-known composer, Janice Kapp Perry, on over eighty hymns and songs during his lifetime, which came to a premature end in the year 2010 following a serious illness. His works, some of which have been performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, are a monument to his life and will bless others through time.
He had a special love for children and their relationship with Jesus, and he has combined these two elements in a hauntingly sweet Christmas hymn, “The King of Little Children.” He has a particular love for this hymn and the interesting musical setting it was given by Janice Kapp Perry.

Like a Lily
For over twenty years U.S. Senator Orrin G. Hatch and his friend, composer Janice Kapp Perry, have collaborated in writing
a special one-page Christmas hymn each year, which was distributed widely among colleagues and friends. It has been a work of the heart as they tried to capture a particular aspect of Christmas that was meaningful to them. This gentle little Christmas hymn conveys the beauty and simple purity of Him who came to earth that first Christmas morning. His purity is compared to “a lily pure and white,” “a lily straight and tall,” and “a lily clean and bright,” and ends with the phrase, “Like a lily, fragrant sweet, Came the Holy Prince of Peace.” Choirs will enjoy the simple pristine feeling of this Christmas carol.

In Bethlehem There Lies a King
Told in the first person (an eyewitness likely a shepherd), InBethlehem There Lies a King recounts what he experiences and saw at the birth of Christ. Music by Kathleen Holyoak and Lyrics by Gary Croxall as follows:
I saw Him in a manger where I touched His hand and smoothed His hair.He smiled at me and I felt peace while in a stable filled with beasts.A wondrous child in swaddling clothes, a blossom fairer than a rose,In Bethlehem I found the babe and heard the angels sing His praise.In Bethlehem there lies a King. “Behold His star,” the angels sing.“The Lord of lords is born this day and rests upon a bed of hay.”I saw the Angel of the Lord whose voice did pierce me to the core.“Fear not,” he spoke with solemn word, “For this is Jesus Christ, the Lord.”The shepherds came and wise men too. They knelt before this baby, whoWas born to rule as King of kings and take away our cares and sins.In Bethlehem there lies a King. “Behold His star,” the angels sing.“The Lord of lords is born this day and rests upon a bed of hay.” Copyright 2014

As we started to put this arrangement together we imagined a small family of pioneers crossing the American plains. During the introduction, verses, and ending we tried to portray this family’s relentless and plodding footsteps in the viola part. During the interludes between verses we imagined the young mother and father reflecting on their journey at the end of a trying day. Perhaps contemplating both the difficulty of their task as well as their love for each other, and their hope in the Savior.

For this hymn we envisioned a bird’s eye view of the earth shortly before the birth of Jesus Christ. As the whirling lines of the violins come together and pull apart throughout this arrangement, we wanted to represent a feeling of excitement and anticipation in the heavens and on the earth before this defining moment in our world’s history. We imagine soaring down from the heavens, and across the holy land as the event draws closer. At the finish we are left with a startlingly peaceful scene of a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

We included this title at the suggestion of a dear friend, and we are so glad we did. This traditional spiritual encapsulates the remorse we sometimes feel after making mistakes or the disappointment we feel if our actions have let down our Heavenly Father. Most importantly, it portrays the miraculous way that only Jesus Christ can heal us.

With this arrangement we wanted to attempt to capture a feeling of timelessness, of eternity. The constant drone in one of the violin parts during the first verse hearkens to a bagpipe, an instrument familiar to the region of this tune’s origin. By the constant sound of the bagpipe drone, and this beautiful melody, we aspire to represent our existence before coming to the earth, and the absence of time in heaven. The second and third verses represent our striving and experience gained through our earthly state. We hope you notice in the fourth verse that the bagpipe drone returns, and the familiar melody is stretched and pulled in places we may not expect, alluding to the subjectivity of time, or the eternal nature of our existence.
Silent Night – Alexander and Aubrey Woods, arrangers
During the introduction we imagined flickering starlight casting a glow on a beautiful manger scene. Each verse depicts the pure simplicity of this humble unaffected setting. In between verses, our interludes represent our internal emotional reaction to our Savior.
Including this piece was another suggestion from someone very dear to us. There is no other composer that has influenced the history of music more that Johann Sebastian Bach. We feel that Bach’s works are so inspired that they transcend time, and the instruments that they are written for. We are so happy to present this familiar piece from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier on the violin and viola. In it, we feel that Bach shares a lifetime of wisdom in less than three minutes.

Ramblin Kind – Tyler Stenson
Ain’t it like the wind to never want to stay;
Something finally touches down
And all at once a gust comes and takes it away.
That old wind is here- then it’s gone.
That old wind is hell-bent on moving on.
So, let’s just say She knows how to go away;
How to keep from standing still
Just like a river, fast cars, birds and trains.
Let’s just say She’s sailing as we speak.
Let’s just say She’s fading by degrees.
Showing tell-tale signs that She’s alive,
Everybody is leaving something sometime.
Always leaving or being left behind,
We’re infamously all the Ramblin Kind.
Some would say I roam and that I’m made of stone
But they don’t know what I know–
I know once you’re in my heart, there is no getting out.
Some would say I’m planted in the ground.
Some would say I’m impossible to pin down.
Showing tell-tale signs that I’m alive,
Everybody is leaving something sometime.
Always leaving or being left behind,
We’re infamously all the Ramblin Kind.
It’s a lonely road I’m speaking of and
These are lonely lyrics rolling off of my tongue.
But there’s a tell-tale truth in between the lines: Everybody is leaving something sometime.
Always leaving or being left behind,
We’re infamously all the Ramblin Kind.

Kelly Clark-Parkinson has chosen a number of traditional and religious tunes, and she works the material from the inside, never overshadowing the melodies but instead seeking their highest, purest form. Ms. Clark-Parkinson is a tremendous instrumentalist. Here, she serves the material, letting the beauty of the melodies she has chosen take the forefront, rather than spoiling the mood with unnecessary pyrotechnics and flourishes (of which she would certainly be more than capable.) The arrangements aren’t simple or dumbed-down, they are just right.

Winter Lullaby
“Winter Lullaby” means to capture the essence of seeing and feeling something holy, wonderful, and beautiful from a child’s perspective. The simplicity and sense of quiet reverence throughout this piece, coupled with the purity of the fallen snow, illustrates the peace and joy that exists within one who is innocent, like a child. With this innocence, slowly, the transformation from a winter scene to a heavenly place occurs in a gradual and glorious display.” – Skyler Wixom, poet.

Proclamations – In Three Parts
The 11th chapter of 3 Nephi, when the Savior appears to the people in America, maybe the most read and most meaningful of all LDS scripture. This piece, with text based from verses in that chapter, is a short choral cycle with three parts. The first is the announcement from God the Father introducing His Beloved Son. The second is the Savior proclaiming his mission and testifying of the atonement that had occurred just a short time before in the old world. You will notice similar purposeful chord progressions in both part 1 and part 2. The third part is the reaction of praise and adoration from the people that experienced this event.
It is an attempt to keep these lyrics sacred and reverent by maintaining easy, uncomplicated rhythm. This piece should be approached in the same way; with simple, clear, purposeful movement. Its sound should be without vibrato (or at most very little vibrato), clean, and with lush ringing.
One of my favorite aspects of this piece is that these lyrics, while found in LDS scripture, are not limited to a Latter-day Saint Christian belief but can be used and are believed by all Christians everywhere. I hope its message and music will be felt by both the performer and the audience.

Teach Me to Walk in the Light – John C. Leavitt, arranger
This setting of “Teach Me to Walk In the Light” has a lot of childlike heart to it. The harmonies are fresh and rich, but the humility of the text remains the most important element. The final verse, which is sung a cappella, is a prayer that is to be sung freely and earnestly. Although at times this arrangement may tend to be dramatic, it is my hope that it will always be sung with simplicity and honesty.

Four Canticles for the Christmas Season
“Four Canticles for the Christmas Season” is a collaboration between HolySheetMusic and Lorenz Publishing. We are delighted to present to you this wonderful Christmas Piece!
About the Piece:
Bobette Olson, while a senior at Fairborn Baker High School in Fairborn, Ohio, wrote the lovely text which she asked me to set to music. While an undergraduate voice and choral education major at CCM (University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) I set about working the thematic ideas for the text. At the time, I was singing tenor as part of the CCM Chamber Singers under the direction of Elmer Thomas, a protege of Robert Shaw. The style is clearly influenced by the acappella work that we were doing at CCM at that time, along with some recording that I did with the Whikehart Chorale, under the direction of Lewis Whikehart. This setting by the St. Martin’s Chamber Choir ideally captures most of the nuance of each piece as originally conceived.
The Recording:
“Four Canticles for the Christmas Season” was recorded December 22, 2007 for Christmas with St. Martin’s Chamber Choir at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Denver, Colorado; Timothy J. Krueger, Artistic Director, Ace Edwards, conductor for this particular concert piece.

Safe Within His Keep
Safe Within His Keep, an award winning song writtenfor SATB or SSAA choir with piano accompaniment by Kathleen Holyoak, has a special message suitable for any worship service. The words beautifully express that we are all lambs of our constant, loving Savior and Shepherd and that He will never fail or forget us as He gently leads us back to our heavenly home. Words by Kathleen Holyoak and Gary Croxall are as follows:
Little lambs who roam far beyond the glen,
Christ will lead you gently home, trust that He’s your friend.
Through the darkest storm, o’er the torrent deep,
Let Him carry you in His arms safe within His keep.
Little lambs who stray, quickly falls the night.
See, the Shepherd points the way, follow in His light.
Listen to His voice. Trust the Master’s care;
Ever near your side, He will guide to meadows bright and fair.
Christ would give His life for one lamb.
He calls each one by name.
He will not abandon you, for none are lost to Him.
Let your heart by still and follow Him.
Little lambs, return to the Shepherds path.
Feed in pastures verdant green, guarded by His staff.
Turn and seek Him now. Feel His quiet peace
As He carries you in His arms, safely, safe within His keep.

Mama Never Forgets Her Birds
Emily Dickenson’s poems have been my constant companions and inspiration for decades. I set seven of her poems to songs for soprano voice and piano and have used three others for choral pieces.
A few years ago I needed a Mother’s Day piece for the choir that I was conducting in Arizona. I wanted words that weren’t overly sentimental, and couldn’t find anything that I liked. I finally decided to see if Emily Dickinson had a poem that I could set to music. When I found Mama Never Forgets Her Birds the melody came to me almost immediately, and the song called to out be set in a slow blues style. I have made two arrangements of the piece, one for SAB and piano and the other for SAB, piano and clarinet. Mary Lou Prince

David Hyrum Smith, the youngest child of the prophet Joseph Smith, was yet unborn at the the time of the martyrdom. The prophet’s enemies were anxious to steal his body, so the sad burial was conducted in secret by a few of Joseph’s friends. Eighteen years later, in 1867, David composed the words and melody of this song reflecting upon his father’s “unknown grave.” Several versions of the text exist with various publication dates. These words have been chosen as the most representative.

Rock Oakeson served for several years as Pianist for the Salt Lake Men’s Choir, and during this time was often asked to arrange and compose pieces for the group. At one point he was asked to create a “signature” piece to be used at concerts and church performances, often as the encore. The result was this setting of the traditional Irish prayer, familiar to many. Slow and mellow, with a wandering sense of harmony, this piece is ideal both for the concert hall and church service. It is intermediate in difficulty.

The sum of every praising voice
Throughout eternity
Could never equal all the love
And grace God’s given me.
The earth beneath, the sky and sun,
The moon, and stars above
For our support and good were made—
All blessings of His love.
This day, and every day with joy
I sing to bless His name
Just as the night and stars unite,

And those before, those still ahead,
And those here with me sing
United and connected through
Our kind, eternal King.

Wondrous Love
Wondrous Love
This piece for 8-part unaccompanied choir was commissioned by Brady Allred for his premiere choral group, the Salt Lake Vocal Artists. It was premiered in March 2012. The opening of the piece draws upon the “older,” more mystical, open-fifth sound native to the original shape-note setting in the Sacred Harp, combining it with harmonies that might be best described as “slightly jazzy.” The textual height of the setting is “Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.” This phrase, which should be one of the greatest musical focal points in performance, embodies the piece’s entire meaning. It emphasizes Jesus’s great sacrifice for humankind, and leads to the up-tempo, more rhythmic setting of the final two verses’ joyful response to that idea. In the faster section, the “Sing, I will sing” and “Sing it!” text serves as a “vocal percussion” accompaniment for the melody.

My Gift, SATB with Organ (1976)
Written at the request of a young adult religious choir in Salt Lake City, Rock Oakeson composed this dramatic four-part SATB Christmas piece with organ accompaniment. In the key of G minor and intermediate in difficulty (both for the choir and organist), this piece was born after Mr. Oakeson heard the poem, “A Birthday Gift, from a Christmas Carol,” by Christina G. Rossetti. Knowing that with a fuller textual treatment, a choral piece with great emotion and depth could be composed, he set out to write a text based on Rossetti’s powerful short poem. With the text completed, he then set it to music which assists in telling the story of what one can give to the Baby Jesus at His Birth. This is a beautiful piece for both the concert hall and for any seasonal church service.

I Stand All Amazed (SATB – John Leavitt)
This arrangement of “I Stand All Amazed” was written to highlight two different perspectives on the Atonement of Jesus Christ: the grandeur and triumph of his conquering of death, and also the personal intimacy that this sacrifice is in each individual heart. The music is at times declamatory and magnificent, and at other times tender and profound. It is a simple, but poignant arrangement that should be fairly easy to learn, leaving much more time, hopefully, for bringing musicality and polished sentiment to the performance.
The recording is sung by the Lux Singers, an elite religious choral ensemble under the direction of Leland Spindler. Based out of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Provo, Utah, their mission is to sing great works from masters of all religious denominations and sects; to sing for the congregates of all religious faiths, in their places of worship. They strive to share the light of each religion’s musical traditions with the world.

Jesus Lover of My Soul – Robert Strobel, composer
This setting of the lyrics, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” reflects the imagery of the simple, tranquil safety of abiding with the Savior. The setting begins blissfully in the key of F major; a syncopated accompaniment with a melody high in the right hand of the piano. The women are alone in the first part of the first verse. After the first verse, the accompaniment calms down, and the more subdued character of the men’s voices enter in Eb in the beginning of the second verse. The piano comes in on the last words of this section, and introduces the ideas associated with the next verse. Afterwards, the well-known melody to the hymn is used in the choir in unison, set in a way that reflects the struggles described in the second verse. God is Justice
God is Mercy
God is behind every Kindness
God is a baby
A maybe
A promise
God is a memory
A question
A prayer in the night
A sound in the ocean
A calm in the heart
God is the color of Light
And it was good to be you
It was good to be me
Good to be us
It was good…
As I sit here alone
on the evening of your death
as the moon curls round the night
I can barely catch my breath
For it seems it was a week ago
I met you
A week ago
We had a family yesterday
their laughter everywhere
How fast they grew and went away
Was it only this morning
I saw it was true
that old couple there was me, and you …
It goes so fast a life is like a day
the minutes pass like Rain
An hour ago I turned to you and said my love
There’s so much life a moment can contain
But you were gone, beyond my voice
And now alone I watch the moon curl round the night

On Christmas
Rock Oakeson writes: “On Christmas,” was written as a commission for chamber choir. The choir specifically told me they wanted something “schmaltzy” (as they put it), so I wrote this with the intention of making it sound a bit like something you would hear on a popular Christmas CD — something a cappella and Henry-Manciniesque. They loved it. Full of seventh chords, it is intermediate in difficulty, and although mildly chromatic, it is firmly planted in the key of C-Major.

Son of the Highest
Son of the Highest for SATB Choir with violin obbligato
Son of the Highest, for SATB choir with violin obbligato by Kathleen Holyoak, is a wonderful choice for any Christmas service. It presents a fresh approach to the Virgin Mary’s experience when the angel, Gabriel, delivered the message that she was chosen by God to give birth to His Son. Mary, overwhelmed and realizing she was fore-ordained to be the Mother of Jesus, humbly accepted the great responsibility, having faith that she and Joseph would raise the Son of God.
The song begins with a gentle, rocking melody and builds to a powerful refrain and exciting ending. Follow the words as you listen:
To Mary, blessed Mary, favored of the Lord,
Came an angel on errand as prophets had foretold.
Mary in tears fell to her knees.
Who would believe her in all of Galilee?
He said she’d conceive and bear a special Son.
His name would be Jesus, the Father’s chosen One.
How could this be for a virgin was she?
The angel assured that with God, nothing is impossible.
He shall be called, Son of the Highest, Alleluia!
The Father shall give Him throne
And He shall reign. Alleluia!
Glory be to Jesus, the Messiah, the Holy One.
And what of dear Joseph, so loyal and true?
The Spirit bore witness he’d know his calling too;
To be not afraid but fully believe
With calm reassurance they’d raise the Son of God.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
Jesus Christ shall reign over the House of David
And of His kingdom there shall be, shall be no end.

Away in a Manger (Two-part vocal – Leavitt, John)
I love this arrangement of “Away in a Manger” by John C. Leavitt for Two-part vocal, violin and piano. It is just lovely. I was sold on this piece the first time I heard it.
In this moving and tender setting of the favorite Christmas song Away in a Manger, there is a great feeling of love and liberation. The piano part gently flows along like water, the violin climbs and soars in quartal steps, and the two women’s voices lovingly describe the scene of the birth of Christ. Notice that the tone and tempo of the last verse change and become as still and reverent as the prayer that it recites. A simple arrangement, but one that contains a deep and moving spirit. Great for a two-part women’s chorus!

Spirit of Life
Spirit of Life – Carolyn Mcdade; arr. David A. Zabriskie
No other song, no other prayer, no other piece of liturgy is so well known and loved in Unitarian Universalism as “Spirit of Life” by Carolyn McDade.
It is our Doxology, or perhaps our “Amazing Grace.” Many congregations sing it every Sunday, or at least enough to know the words by heart. Sermons have been devoted to this one song. A new adult religious education curriculum being field-tested this fall is based on the song. It is sung at weddings and memorial services, around campfires and at demonstrations, at cradles and hospital bedsides.
In six short lines “Spirit of Life” touches so much that is central to our faith—compassion, justice, community, freedom, reverence for nature, and the mystery of life. It finds the common ground held by humanists and theists, pagans and Christians, Buddhists and Jews, gay and straight among us.
Spirit of Life, come unto me.
Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.
Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;
Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.
Roots hold me close; wings set me free;
Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.

When the daffodils arrive

spread their welcome far and near.
When the sweet rain showers come,
in the greening of the year,
birds will sing and bees will hum.
Alleluia time is here.

How Can I Keep from Singing (SATB) – Dan Carter, arranger
A gentle, building, inspiring setting of Robert Lowry’s beloved hymn, arranged by Daniel Carter. Flute obbligato creates a mood of birds singing with the choir. Gently building to an inspiring ending with a simple descant on the last verse.
My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth’s lamentation,
I hear the sweet, tho’ far-off hymn
That hails a new creation;
Thro’ all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul—
How can I keep from singing?
What tho’ my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Saviour liveth;
What tho’ the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
Since first I learned to love it,
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his—
How can I keep from singing?

Be Not Afraid (SATB) – Janice Kapp Perry and Ann Kapp Andersen, composers/arrangers
This motivating anthem is a powerful treatise on walking by faith through all of the challenges and trials of our lives. No stranger to trials himself, John V. Pearson penned these poignant lyrics a few years before his passing at an early age. Combined with the music of Janice Kapp Perry and now the choral arrangement by Ann Kapp Andersen, it stands as a strong testimony of how we must trust God’s way in every aspect of our lives. It would enhance any church meeting and could especially fortify missionaries as they depart.

This heart-touching anthem, with words by John V. Pearson, describes that
supernal moment in Third Nephi when Christ descends to visit the saints at Bountiful following His crucifixion and resurrection saying, “Behold, I am Jesus Christ whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.” The verses describe how he blessed,and healed and taught those who were present. First published as a hymn with music by Janice Kapp Perry, it has now been beautifully enhanced as a choral piece by Ann Kapp Andersen. It would be appropriate for any sacred church gathering, but would be especially meaningful at Easter time.
