“In the four decades that I’ve been a violinist, I have played in many traditional venues and some surprising ones: the ancient ruins of an old Roman amphitheater, a hayfield in Central Utah, a grove of trees in western Canada. I arranged ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Abide With Me’ for solo violin because I wanted to be able to play for people in any situation without needing accompaniment. I’ve known for some time that people have a strong emotional attachment to hymns—it is the music they grew up with and associate with spiritual experiences. I received so much positive feedback to these arrangements that I considered writing more, and Kelly Richardson—a local composer and lover of the arts—convinced me to arrange a collection of hymns and make them available to other violinists. I realized he was right. I had used my two humble arrangements so extensively that I wrote nine more. I hope other violinists find them just as useful and inspiring as I have.”

The “Coventry Carol” is a Christmas carol dating back to the 16th century. The carol was performed in the city of Coventry, England as part of a mystery play called “The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors.” The play depicted the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew. This carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. The lyrics of this haunting carol represent a mother’s lament for her doomed child. This is the only carol that has survived from this play.

“Deck the Halls” is a traditional Yuletide and New Years’ carol. The tune is Welsh, dating back to the sixteenth century, and belongs to a winter carol titled “Nos Galan”. In the eighteenth century, Mozart used the tune for a violin and piano duet. My first introduction to this song came as a kid when I saw the movie “A Christmas Story” and the Chinese Restaurant food servers entertained their guests by singing an out of tune “Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra” to the family in the movie.

I remember thinking this was the funniest thing I had ever heard as a kid.

When I started this arrangement, I wanted to come up with something that was fun and showy to play. I ended up combining the rhythm from my arrangement of Called to Serve. It seemed to fit welll, and this is now one of my favorite pieces to perform during the holidays. Have fun with it, and don’t hesitate to add a few extra notes or jazz it up even more when you play it!

When I began working on this arrangement, I wanted the song to be pretty, but also portray the emotions and excitement we would feel for the coming of our Savior. In the middle of the song you will hear the melody from Joy to the World. As you move toward the middle and end of the song, I’ve integrated more of a marching sound, meant to give reference to the fact that the work continues to move forward. On the last verse, I slow down the melody and go into the higher octaves. For the final verse, I pictured someone who was engaged in the work of the Lord but the time had come to move on to the next phase in their life. The emotions I wanted to portray at the end of the song were of those who were left behind to continue the work.

We live in an exciting time, and our possibilities are endless. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunities you have to learn, grow, develop and enjoy life. However, be sure you make time for those things that are most important in the eternities as well.

This is a Christmas carol written by John Jacob Niles. The carol has its origins in a song fragment collected in 1933 at a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police. In the unpublished autobiography, Niles wrote:

“A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievably dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins…. But, best of all, she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song.”

Based on this girl’s song, Niles wrote this well known tune.

This piece was inspired by three things: 1) the wonderful people at First Presbyterian Church in Creswell, Oregon, where I have had the honor to serve as Pianist/Organist/Choir Accompanist, 2) my friendship with Beth Wheeler, who is the Pastor’s wife there as well as a Professor of Music Education at the University of Oregon — and a very gifted flutist, and 3) the colorful golden autumn landscapes which are one of the many reasons why I live in Oregon. Utilizing the full range of the flute, as well as the multi-tonal colors of the piano, this piece requires more advanced players. I hope you enjoy this tribute to my favorite time of year!

This is one of the all time classic Christmas songs. It was first performed with a guitar accompaniment in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. The text was written by priest Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by Franz Gruber.

The song was also sung simultaneously in French, English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, a song that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.

It’s interesting how music has the ability to bring different cultures together and break down barriers of misunderstanding that in some cases have existed over long periods of time.

The music for this song is an Irish folk song entitled, “Slane”. David Evans combined the old Irish text written in the 6th century with the folk melody and it was first published in the 1927 edition of the Church of Scotland’s Hymnary. It is now sung in churches around the world and is widely known as “Be Thou My Vision.”

A popular arrangement of this melody has been performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in which they combine the folk melody Slane, with the text “Take Time to be Holy” which was written by William D. Longstaff.

I decided to include this arrangement in this Christmas book because even though it may not be considered a traditional Christmas carol, the message of a Savior in this song is clear and is certainly fitting for the Christmas Season.

The author of this hymn text, John V. Pearson, was a scriptorian who truly delighted in the scriptures and understood that the important things of both this life and the next are recorded both on earth and in heaven. In 3 Nephi 23, Nephi brought forth the records and laid them before the Lord, who asked why they had not recorded the words of Samuel regarding events surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection. Nephi remembered that “this thing had not been written” and Jesus commanded that it should be written.

This hymn would certainly be appropriate at Christmas time. Other verses continue and give a broaderoverview of Christ’s mission, which makes the piece appropriate for Easter worship or for any occasionthat celebrates the life and mission of Jesus Christ. The hymn version of this work, with music by Janice Kapp Perry, won the “Award of Distinction” in the Music Submissions of the LDS Church and had it’s premiere performance at the Music Festival in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. This choral arrangement by Ann Kapp Andersen widens its appeal to Christian choirs everywhere

One of my favorite musical inventions of the 21^st century is the “mash-up.” Used mostly in popular music styles, the general idea of the technique is to take two or more songs and combine them, intertwining their musical themes and rhythmic ideas to create new musical ideas. I enjoy using this pop music technique in my works for the concert hall. In this piece, you’ll hear this used mostly in the second verse. While the sopranos sing the melody, the altos sing an altered version of the hymn “The Lord Is My Shepherd” as a counter melody. Meanwhile, the accompaniment borrows from “Joseph Dear, Oh Joseph Mine,” “The Wexford Carol,” and “Mary’s Lullaby.” Combined with the “Coventry Carol” transition between the first and second verses, there are five different songs and carols that will be heard.

While the piano accompaniment illustrates the musical borrowing, the pastoral nature of this setting is best heard when using the instrumental accompaniment. The original arrangement is scored for flute, oboe, guitar, and piano. The parts are included here, with an alternate piano/vocal score for when the instruments are being utilized. Feel free to use any C instrument that works for your choir. The guitar is optional, but I highly recommend it, as it really adds to the overall sound.

It was a joy to write this arrangement, and I hope you enjoy performing it.

This piece for 8-part unaccompanied choir was commissioned by Brady Allred for his premiere choral group, the Salt Lake Vocal Artists. It was premiered in March 2012. The opening of the piece draws upon the “older,” more mystical, open-fifth sound native to the original shape-note setting in the Sacred Harp, combining it with harmonies that might be best described as “slightly jazzy.” The textual height of the setting is “Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.” This phrase, which should be one of the greatest musical focal points in performance, embodies the piece’s entire meaning. It emphasizes Jesus’s great sacrifice for humankind, and leads to the up-tempo, more rhythmic setting of the final two verses’ joyful response to that idea. In the faster section, the “Sing, I will sing” and “Sing it!” text serves as a “vocal percussion” accompaniment for the melody.

David took on the project gladly, but had to laugh a little when John assured him that the funeral would probably not take place for many years to come. John is in perfect health.

It presents a fresh approach to the Virgin Mary’s experience when the angel, Gabriel, delivered the message that she was chosen by God to give birth to His Son. Mary, overwhelmed and realizing she was fore-ordained to be the Mother of Jesus, humbly accepted the great responsibility, having faith that she and Joseph would raise the Son of God.

The song begins with a gentle, rocking melody and builds to a powerful refrain and exciting ending. Follow the words as you listen:

Emily Dickenson’s poems have been my constant companions and inspiration for decades. I set seven of her poems to songs for soprano voice and piano and have used three others for choral pieces.

A few years ago I needed a Mother’s Day piece for the choir that I was conducting in Arizona. I wanted words that weren’t overly sentimental, and couldn’t find anything that I liked. I finally decided to see if Emily Dickinson had a poem that I could set to music. When I found Mama Never Forgets Her Birds the melody came to me almost immediately, and the song called to out be set in a slow blues style. Written at the request of a young adult religious choir in Salt Lake City, Rock Oakeson composed this dramatic four-part SATB Christmas piece with organ accompaniment. In the key of G minor and intermediate in difficulty (both for the choir and organist), this piece was born after Mr. Oakeson heard the poem, “A Birthday Gift, from a Christmas Carol,” by Christina G. Rossetti. Knowing that with a fuller textual treatment, a choral piece with great emotion and depth could be composed, he set out to write a text based on Rossetti’s powerful short poem. With the text completed, he then set it to music which assists in telling the story of what one can give to the Baby Jesus at His Birth. This is a beautiful piece for both the concert hall and for any seasonal church service.

Rock Oakeson served for several years as Pianist for the Salt Lake Men’s Choir, and during this time was often asked to arrange and compose pieces for the group. At one point he was asked to create a “signature” piece to be used at concerts and church performances, often as the encore. The result was this setting of the traditional Irish prayer, familiar to many. Slow and mellow, with a wandering sense of harmony, this piece is ideal both for the concert hall and church service. It is intermediate in difficulty.

This setting of “Teach Me to Walk In the Light” has a lot of childlike heart to it. The harmonies are fresh and rich, but the humility of the text remains the most important element. The final verse, which is sung a cappella, is a prayer that is to be sung freely and earnestly. Although at times this arrangement may tend to be dramatic, it is my hope that it will always be sung with simplicity and honesty.
