After the first verse, the accompaniment calms down, and the more subdued character of the men’s voices enter in Eb in the beginning of the second verse. The last verse ends a cappella with a short ending by the piano.

He had a special love for children and their relationship with Jesus, and he has combined these two elements in a hauntingly sweet Christmas hymn, “The King of Little Children.” He has a particular love for this hymn and the interesting musical setting it was given by Janice Kapp Perry.

With this arrangement we wanted to attempt to capture a feeling of timelessness, of eternity. The constant drone in one of the violin parts during the first verse hearkens to a bagpipe, an instrument familiar to the region of this tune’s origin. By the constant sound of the bagpipe drone, and this beautiful melody, we aspire to represent our existence before coming to the earth, and the absence of time in heaven. The second and third verses represent our striving and experience gained through our earthly state. We hope you notice in the fourth verse that the bagpipe drone returns, and the familiar melody is stretched and pulled in places we may not expect, alluding to the subjectivity of time, or the eternal nature of our existence.

a special one-page Christmas hymn each year, which was distributed widely among colleagues and friends. It has been a work of the heart as they tried to capture a particular aspect of Christmas that was meaningful to them. This gentle little Christmas hymn conveys the beauty and simple purity of Him who came to earth that first Christmas morning. Emily Dickenson’s poems have been my constant companions and inspiration for decades. I set seven of her poems to songs for soprano voice and piano and have used three others for choral pieces.
A few years ago I needed a Mother’s Day piece for the choir that I was conducting in Arizona. I wanted words that weren’t overly sentimental, and couldn’t find anything that I liked. I finally decided to see if Emily Dickinson had a poem that I could set to music. When I found Mama Never Forgets Her Birds the melody came to me almost immediately, and the song called to out be set in a slow blues style. I have made two arrangements of the piece, one for SAB and piano and the other for SAB, piano and clarinet. Mary Lou Prince

Written at the request of a young adult religious choir in Salt Lake City, Rock Oakeson composed this dramatic four-part SATB Christmas piece with organ accompaniment. In the key of G minor and intermediate in difficulty (both for the choir and organist), this piece was born after Mr. Oakeson heard the poem, “A Birthday Gift, from a Christmas Carol,” by Christina G. Rossetti. Knowing that with a fuller textual treatment, a choral piece with great emotion and depth could be composed, he set out to write a text based on Rossetti’s powerful short poem. With the text completed, he then set it to music which assists in telling the story of what one can give to the Baby Jesus at His Birth. This is a beautiful piece for both the concert hall and for any seasonal church service.

This arrangement of “Nearer, My God, to Thee” begins with an original setting of the hymn’s words, a cappella, indicating the message of courage and trust in the Savior contained in the first verse. The piano comes in on the last words of this section, and introduces the ideas associated with the next verse. Afterwards, the well-known melody to the hymn is used in the choir in unison, set in a way that reflects the struggles described in the second verse. The third and final verse returns to the setting of the words from the beginning of the work. The final verse discusses the aid of heaven, and the work ends hopefully.

This song is also known as “O Tannenbaum”. It is of German origin. The most well known version was written in 1824 by Leigzig organist, teacher and composer Ernst Anschütz. The melody is an old folk tune. The first known “Tannenbaum” song lyrics date back to 1550.
O Come All Ye Faithful just seemed to fit well with O Christmas Tree. The original tune name is “Adeste Fideles” and is attributed to John Frances Wade. It is one of my favorite hymn tunes. This is a great intermediate piece for those learning to play piano.

O Thou in Whose Presence came about as a thought that I’d perhaps arrange a work from Southern Harmony. This hymn was attractive, in that it was very much a proto-typical version of the hymn Redeemer of Israel, which appears in the LDS hymnbook. The melody is less ornamented or slightly different in comparison with the later hymn, and to my liking, the version of this text is also is set in first person. This version I have arranged also has some wonderful and unique sentiments that should be resurrected in song and sung for all to hear. Picking the verses I wanted to use, I attempted to paint the pastoral nature of the text in the second verse, and throughout the work I tried to express the idea of affliction melting away into hope.

The choir specifically told me they wanted something “schmaltzy” (as they put it), so I wrote this with the intention of making it sound a bit like something you would hear on a popular Christmas CD — something a cappella and Henry-Manciniesque. They loved it. Full of seventh chords, it is intermediate in difficulty, and although mildly chromatic, it is firmly planted in the key of C-Major.

The author of this hymn text, John V. Pearson, was a scriptorian who truly delighted in the scriptures and understood that the important things of both this life and the next are recorded both on earth and in heaven. In 3 Nephi 23, Nephi brought forth the records and laid them before the Lord, who asked why they had not recorded the words of Samuel regarding events surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection. Nephi remembered that “this thing had not been written” and Jesus commanded that it should be written.
This hymn would certainly be appropriate at Christmas time. Other verses continue and give a broaderoverview of Christ’s mission, which makes the piece appropriate for Easter worship or for any occasionthat celebrates the life and mission of Jesus Christ. The hymn version of this work, with music by Janice Kapp Perry, won the “Award of Distinction” in the Music Submissions of the LDS Church and had it’s premiere performance at the Music Festival in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. This choral arrangement by Ann Kapp Andersen widens its appeal to Christian choirs everywhere

Proclamations – In Three Parts
The 11th chapter of 3 Nephi, when the Savior appears to the people in America, maybe the most read and most meaningful of all LDS scripture. This piece, with text based from verses in that chapter, is a short choral cycle with three parts. The first is the announcement from God the Father introducing His Beloved Son. The second is the Savior proclaiming his mission and testifying of the atonement that had occurred just a short time before in the old world. You will notice similar purposeful chord progressions in both part 1 and part 2. The third part is the reaction of praise and adoration from the people that experienced this event.
It is an attempt to keep these lyrics sacred and reverent by maintaining easy, uncomplicated rhythm. This piece should be approached in the same way; with simple, clear, purposeful movement. Its sound should be without vibrato (or at most very little vibrato), clean, and with lush ringing.
One of my favorite aspects of this piece is that these lyrics, while found in LDS scripture, are not limited to a Latter-day Saint Christian belief but can be used and are believed by all Christians everywhere. I hope its message and music will be felt by both the performer and the audience.

Ms. Clark-Parkinson is a tremendous instrumentalist. Here, she serves the material, letting the beauty of the melodies she has chosen take the forefront, rather than spoiling the mood with unnecessary pyrotechnics and flourishes (of which she would certainly be more than capable.) The arrangements aren’t simple or dumbed-down, they are just right.

This is one of the all time classic Christmas songs. It was first performed with a guitar accompaniment in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. The text was written by priest Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by Franz Gruber.
The song was also sung simultaneously in French, English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, a song that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.
It’s interesting how music has the ability to bring different cultures together and break down barriers of misunderstanding that in some cases have existed over long periods of time.

It presents a fresh approach to the Virgin Mary’s experience when the angel, Gabriel, delivered the message that she was chosen by God to give birth to His Son. Mary, overwhelmed and realizing she was fore-ordained to be the Mother of Jesus, humbly accepted the great responsibility, having faith that she and Joseph would raise the Son of God.
The song begins with a gentle, rocking melody and builds to a powerful refrain and exciting ending. Follow the words as you listen:

No other song, no other prayer, no other piece of liturgy is so well known and loved in Unitarian Universalism as “Spirit of Life” by Carolyn McDade.
