This piece for 8-part unaccompanied choir was commissioned by Brady Allred for his premiere choral group, the Salt Lake Vocal Artists. It was premiered in March 2012. The opening of the piece draws upon the “older,” more mystical, open-fifth sound native to the original shape-note setting in the Sacred Harp, combining it with harmonies that might be best described as “slightly jazzy.” The textual height of the setting is “Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.” This phrase, which should be one of the greatest musical focal points in performance, embodies the piece’s entire meaning. It emphasizes Jesus’s great sacrifice for humankind, and leads to the up-tempo, more rhythmic setting of the final two verses’ joyful response to that idea. In the faster section, the “Sing, I will sing” and “Sing it!” text serves as a “vocal percussion” accompaniment for the melody.

We Three Kings
This unusual arrangement of one of the most beloved carols, “We three Kings,” arranged by Kathleen Holyoak, evokes mysterious images of the three Magi as they traveled from the East. The underlying rhythmic motive in the bass accompaniment is the heartbeat of the arrangement and represents the motion of the camels and the jingle of camel bells as they saunter slowly through the desert in search of the Christ child in Jerusalem. (Note: Cameleers often put bells on camels at night to prevent them from getting lost.)
“We Three Kings” remains one of the most frequently sung Christmas carols today. This arrangement is suitable for a soloist or a small group singing in unison.

Unknown Grave, The
David Hyrum Smith, the youngest child of the prophet Joseph Smith, was yet unborn at the the time of the martyrdom. The prophet’s enemies were anxious to steal his body, so the sad burial was conducted in secret by a few of Joseph’s friends. Eighteen years later, in 1867, David composed the words and melody of this song reflecting upon his father’s “unknown grave.” Several versions of the text exist with various publication dates. These words have been chosen as the most representative.

This is one of the all time classic Christmas songs. It was first performed with a guitar accompaniment in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. The text was written by priest Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by Franz Gruber.
The song was also sung simultaneously in French, English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, a song that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.
It’s interesting how music has the ability to bring different cultures together and break down barriers of misunderstanding that in some cases have existed over long periods of time.
