Requiem
A Celebration of Life
1 – It Was Good
text by Kathleen Cahill
God is Justice
God is Mercy
God is behind every Kindness
God is a baby
A maybe
A promise
God is a memory
A question
A prayer in the night
A sound in the ocean
A calm in the heart
God is the color of Light
And it was good to be you
It was good to be me
Good to be us
It was good…
As I sit here alone
on the evening of your death
as the moon curls round the night
I can barely catch my breath
For it seems it was a week ago
I met you
We had a family yesterday
their laughter everywhere
How fast they grew and went away
Was it only this morning
I saw it was true
that old couple there was me, and you …
It goes so fast a life is like a day
the minutes pass like Rain
An hour ago I turned to you and said my love
There’s so much life a moment can contain
But you were gone, beyond my voice
And now alone I watch the moon curl round the night
And I rejoice in the life we shared together
I rejoice I rejoice
For it was worth all the time in the world
And it was good to be you
It was good to be me
Good to be us
It was good….

The Gift
The Gift, arrangement for SATB (but mostly SAB), with words with a contemporary and fresh approach when referencing the birth of Jesus Christ, is a lovely choice for any Christmas worship service. The gentle, rocking melody is easy and can be learned in just a couple of rehearsals. The refrain, “Share the gift that God has given; His gift to you, His Christmas gift, His gift to you and me” builds to a wonderful ending. Follow the words as you listen:
The Gift
Words: GARY CROXALL Music: KATHLEEN HOLYOAK
God’s Christmas gift was never wrapped
And tied up with a bow.
It wasn’t purchased in a shop
Nor found within a store.
It was a simple gift, indeed,
Yet sacred and sublime.
It was a gift of love, a gift of life
Of hope and peace divine.
Search out the gift, embrace it tenderly.
Share the gift that God has given,
His gift to you and me.
God gave no gold, no frankincense;
He gave no amber myrrh.
The Father gave to all mankind,
A baby fair and pure.
He gave His Son to you and me,
It was our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He is the gift, our Christmas gift,
Born that holy night.
Search out the gift, embrace it tenderly.
Share the gift that God has given;
His gift to you,
His Christmas gift,
His gift to you and me.

We Three Kings
arr. Kathleen Holyoak
Vocal Solo
We Three Kings
This unusual arrangement of one of the most beloved carols, “We three Kings,” arranged by Kathleen Holyoak, evokes mysterious images of the three Magi as they traveled from the East. The underlying rhythmic motive in the bass accompaniment is the heartbeat of the arrangement and represents the motion of the camels and the jingle of camel bells as they saunter slowly through the desert in search of the Christ child in Jerusalem. (Note: Cameleers often put bells on camels at night to prevent them from getting lost.)
“We Three Kings” remains one of the most frequently sung Christmas carols today. This arrangement is suitable for a soloist or a small group singing in unison.

Dies irae, dies illa This day, this day of wrath
Solvet saeclum in favilla. shall consume the world in ashes.
What trembling there will be
When the judge shall come
to weigh everything strictly!
When the judge takes his seat
all that is hidden shall appear
Nothing will remain unavenged
What shall I, a wretch say then?
To which protector shall I appeal
When even the just man is barely safe?
King of awful majesty
You freely save those worthy of salvation
Save me, fount of pity.
Remember, gentle Jesus
that I am the reason for your time on earth,
do not cast me out on that day.
I groan as one guilty,
My face blushes with guilt
spare the suppliant, O God.
When the damned are confounded
and consigned to keen flames,
call me with the blessed.
O God,
merciful Lord Jesus:
Give them rest.

Son of the Highest
Son of the Highest for SATB Choir with violin obbligato
Son of the Highest, for SATB choir with violin obbligato by Kathleen Holyoak, is a wonderful choice for any Christmas service. It presents a fresh approach to the Virgin Mary’s experience when the angel, Gabriel, delivered the message that she was chosen by God to give birth to His Son. Mary, overwhelmed and realizing she was fore-ordained to be the Mother of Jesus, humbly accepted the great responsibility, having faith that she and Joseph would raise the Son of God.
The song begins with a gentle, rocking melody and builds to a powerful refrain and exciting ending. Follow the words as you listen:
To Mary, blessed Mary, favored of the Lord,
Came an angel on errand as prophets had foretold.
Mary in tears fell to her knees.
Who would believe her in all of Galilee?
He said she’d conceive and bear a special Son.
His name would be Jesus, the Father’s chosen One.
How could this be for a virgin was she?
The angel assured that with God, nothing is impossible.
He shall be called, Son of the Highest, Alleluia!
The Father shall give Him throne
And He shall reign. Alleluia!
Glory be to Jesus, the Messiah, the Holy One.
And what of dear Joseph, so loyal and true?
The Spirit bore witness he’d know his calling too;
To be not afraid but fully believe
With calm reassurance they’d raise the Son of God.
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
Jesus Christ shall reign over the House of David
And of His kingdom there shall be, shall be no end.
Praise the Son of God. Alleluia!
Full of grace and truth.
The Savior, the Redeemer,
And the Only Begotten Son.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Take My Hand
Take My Hand, a SATB choral arrangement with music by Kathleen Holyoak, is an especially beautiful title relating to the theme of service: helping and lifting others and a wonderful choice for any worship service. This title is also available in a SSA arrangement and includes a violin obbligato. Follow the words as you listen:
When I reach to help another,
When I seek to take their part,
I can feel the love of heaven
Settle gently in my heart.
With these hands to offer mercy
I help wipe away each care,
As I bend to lift another
From despair, from despair.
Take my hand, take my hand,
I will lift you come what may.
With faith the Lord, our loving Lord,
With faith that He will always show the way.
We are sent to render comfort and to
Pray for those who mourn,
And bring the gospel radiance
To each friend who is forlorn;
To lift them in their weakness
With help from heav’n above,
And walk with them and talk with them
Until they feel God’s love.
When I see a person suff’ring
From a loss or from a need,
When a neighbor seeks my comfort
And I hasten to pay heed.
Then the Holy Spirit guides me,
Shedding light along the way,
As I’m reaching out to others
Day by day, day by day.
Take my hand, take my hand,
I will keep you come what may.
Come walk with me until you see
Our Savior’s arms are always open wide.
Take my hand, take my hand.

Away in a Manger (Two-part vocal – Leavitt, John)
I love this arrangement of “Away in a Manger” by John C. Leavitt for Two-part vocal, violin and piano. It is just lovely. I was sold on this piece the first time I heard it.
In this moving and tender setting of the favorite Christmas song Away in a Manger, there is a great feeling of love and liberation. The piano part gently flows along like water, the violin climbs and soars in quartal steps, and the two women’s voices lovingly describe the scene of the birth of Christ. Notice that the tone and tempo of the last verse change and become as still and reverent as the prayer that it recites. A simple arrangement, but one that contains a deep and moving spirit. Great for a duet, or a two-part women’s chorus!

Spirit of Life – Carolyn Mcdade; arr. David A. Zabriskie
No other song, no other prayer, no other piece of liturgy is so well known and loved in Unitarian Universalism as “Spirit of Life” by Carolyn McDade.
It is our Doxology, or perhaps our “Amazing Grace.” Many congregations sing it every Sunday, or at least enough to know the words by heart. Sermons have been devoted to this one song. A new adult religious education curriculum being field-tested this fall is based on the song. It is sung at weddings and memorial services, around campfires and at demonstrations, at cradles and hospital bedsides.
In six short lines “Spirit of Life” touches so much that is central to our faith—compassion, justice, community, freedom, reverence for nature, and the mystery of life. It finds the common ground held by humanists and theists, pagans and Christians, Buddhists and Jews, gay and straight among us.
Spirit of Life, come unto me.
Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.
Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;
Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.
Roots hold me close; wings set me free;
Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.

Beautiful Savior – arr. Jason Tonioli
Of all the traditional Hymns that refer to the Savior, I felt like this one captured the Christmas Spirit. I included this in this Christmas book because it has always reminded me of a lullaby you would sing to a baby. What better way to recognize the baby Jesus, than with this music that was written for Him.
This song is also entitled “Fairest Lord Jesus.” The music and lyrics were written by German Jesuits in the 17th Century and is known as a Silesian folk song. The version most people are familiar with was arranged by Richard S. Willis in 1850.
The music for this song is an Irish folk song entitled, “Slane”. David Evans combined the old Irish text written in the 6th century with the folk melody and it was first published in the 1927 edition of the Church of Scotland’s Hymnary. It is now sung in churches around the world and is widely known as “Be Thou My Vision.”
A popular arrangement of this melody has been performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in which they combine the folk melody Slane, with the text “Take Time to be Holy” which was written by William D. Longstaff.
I decided to include this arrangement in this Christmas book because even though it may not be considered a traditional Christmas carol, the message of a Savior in this song is clear and is certainly fitting for the Christmas Season.

Coventry Carol – arr. Jason Tonioli
The “Coventry Carol” is a Christmas carol dating back to the 16th century. The carol was performed in the city of Coventry, England as part of a mystery play called “The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors.” The play depicted the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew. This carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. The lyrics of this haunting carol represent a mother’s lament for her doomed child. This is the only carol that has survived from this play.

Deck the Halls – arr. Jason Tonioli
“Deck the Halls” is a traditional Yuletide and New Years’ carol. The tune is Welsh, dating back to the sixteenth century, and belongs to a winter carol titled “Nos Galan”. In the eighteenth century, Mozart used the tune for a violin and piano duet. My first introduction to this song came as a kid when I saw the movie “A Christmas Story” and the Chinese Restaurant food servers entertained their guests by singing an out of tune “Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra” to the family in the movie.
I remember thinking this was the funniest thing I had ever heard as a kid.
When I started this arrangement, I wanted to come up with something that was fun and showy to play. I ended up combining the rhythm from my arrangement of Called to Serve. It seemed to fit welll, and this is now one of my favorite pieces to perform during the holidays. Have fun with it, and don’t hesitate to add a few extra notes or jazz it up even more when you play it!

I Wonder as I Wander – arr. Jason Tonioli
This is a Christmas carol written by John Jacob Niles. The carol has its origins in a song fragment collected in 1933 at a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police. In the unpublished autobiography, Niles wrote:
“A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievably dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins…. But, best of all, she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song.”
Based on this girl’s song, Niles wrote this well known tune.

O Christmas Tree – O Come All Ye Faithful (Piano Solo – Tonioli)
O Christmas Tree – O Come All Ye Faithful – arr. Jason Tonioli
This song is also known as “O Tannenbaum”. It is of German origin. The most well known version was written in 1824 by Leigzig organist, teacher and composer Ernst Anschütz. The melody is an old folk tune. The first known “Tannenbaum” song lyrics date back to 1550.
O Come All Ye Faithful just seemed to fit well with O Christmas Tree. The original tune name is “Adeste Fideles” and is attributed to John Frances Wade. It is one of my favorite hymn tunes. This is a great intermediate piece for those learning to play piano.

Think of a scene with shepherds from the “hills” of Bethlehem in ancient times as you play this song.
Try to capture a sad yet hopeful feeling of a person who is waiting to be delivered from hard times. Just as in ancient times when people waited for the Savior, individuals are struggling to survive today and hoping for something or someone to help them. This is a song of hope for deliverance from difficult times.

Silent Night (Vocal Solo – Tonioli)
Silent Night – Tonioli, Jason
This is one of the all time classic Christmas songs. It was first performed with a guitar accompaniment in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. The text was written by priest Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by Franz Gruber.
The song was also sung simultaneously in French, English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, a song that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.
It’s interesting how music has the ability to bring different cultures together and break down barriers of misunderstanding that in some cases have existed over long periods of time.

Sussex Carol – arr. Jason Tonioli
The Sussex Carol is a popular British carol that was first published in 1684, by Luke Wadding, a 17th-century Irish bishop. It is a simple but fun carol to play for people during the holidays.
If you enjoy making up songs, I encourage you to write them down so they can be shared with others. You never know if your song might be played by someone 300 years later. At very least, you’ll be able to play it again in the future. Learning to write down music takes time, but I can tell you from experience, it is worth it.

This is one of my mother’s favorite songs. She sang in a choir as a teenage girl. For one of their concerts, choir members stood on a platform shaped like a Christmas tree during a holiday concert. Singing with the choir, the harmony of the “Gloria In Excelsis Deo” chorus reminds her of how the hosts of heaven singing must have sounded.

A beautiful and simple setting of A.E. Housman’s text, Loveliest of Trees. This setting is for solo voice (Medium High). This solo was composed for Nikki Blackburn, sung on the 2016 Easter Service at the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City.
Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.
Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.
And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

When I Think of You
Daniel Carter
Vocal Solo
When I Think of You
When I Think of You – Daniel Carter, composer
Vocal solo for medium range voice and piano expressing gratitude for parents from a perspective of becoming one. Especially suitable for Mother’s and Father’s Day. Composer Daniel Carter wrote this song after a conversation with his daughter who said to him on his birthday, “I just want you to know I get it. I understand now what it means to be a parent, to worry, to love, to make everything in your life about your children. And I can’t thank you and love you enough for what you’ve done.”
When I was just a child you sat and read to me,
And told me I could do most anything,
Told me be anything that my heart could dream.
It made me smile.
And so I grew and learned, and as I claimed my life,
My stubborn will divided you and I,
And all those words we said were sometimes filled with strife,
And we would cry.
Sunny days could turn to rainy days
When I would storm around when I didn’t get my way.
Sunny days along with rainy days
Can give new meaning to our lives and reason for our ways.
The little notes you wrote that brought those happy smiles,
The pranks you pulled denying all the while,
The endless times that I thought I knew better than you,
How wrong I…
I understand now the sacrifice you made,
How hard it was to do all of the things you did.
I understand now how easy hurt is dealt,
How slow the healing till no more sting is felt.
And when I think of you, I think of sunny days,
The kind that come when rain has gone away,
The kind like when you kissed my tears away,
Those days I…
I understand now how blessed and loved I am.
Those little words we say,
So overused but they are true,
Those little words—I love you.

Teach Me to Walk in the Light – John C. Leavitt, arranger
This setting of “Teach Me to Walk In the Light” has a lot of childlike heart to it. The harmonies are fresh and rich, but the humility of the text remains the most important element. The final verse, which is sung a cappella, is a prayer that is to be sung freely and earnestly. Although at times this arrangement may tend to be dramatic, it is my hope that it will always be sung with simplicity and honesty.

Words by the late Reverend Carl G. Seaburg of the Unitarian Universalist Association and music from an Hasidic tune, David Zabriskie creates an a cappella arrangement for Solo Voice and SATB Choir.
When the daffodils arrive
in the Easter of the year,
and the spirit starts to thrive,
let the heart beat free and clear.
When the pussy willows bloom
in the springing of the year,
let the heart find loving room
spread their welcome far and near.
When the sweet rain showers come,
in the greening of the year,
birds will sing and bees will hum.
Alleluia time is here.

How Can I Keep from Singing (SATB) – Dan Carter, arranger
A gentle, building, inspiring setting of Robert Lowry’s beloved hymn, arranged by Daniel Carter. Flute obbligato creates a mood of birds singing with the choir. Gently building to an inspiring ending with a simple descant on the last verse.
My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth’s lamentation,
I hear the sweet, tho’ far-off hymn
That hails a new creation;
Thro’ all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul—
How can I keep from singing?
What tho’ my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Saviour liveth;
What tho’ the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
Since first I learned to love it,
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his—
How can I keep from singing?

This motivating anthem is a powerful treatise on walking by faith through all of the challenges and trials of our lives. No stranger to trials himself, John V. Pearson penned these poignant lyrics a few years before his passing at an early age. Combined with the music of Janice Kapp Perry and now the choral arrangement by Ann Kapp Andersen, it stands as a strong testimony of how we must trust God’s way in every aspect of our lives. It would enhance any church meeting and could especially fortify missionaries as they depart.

This heart-touching anthem, with words by John V. Pearson, describes that
supernal moment in Third Nephi when Christ descends to visit the saints at Bountiful following His crucifixion and resurrection saying, “Behold, I am Jesus Christ whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.” The verses describe how he blessed, and healed and taught those who were present. First published as a hymn with music by Janice Kapp Perry, it has now been beautifully enhanced as a choral piece by Ann Kapp Andersen. It would be appropriate for any sacred church gathering, but would be especially meaningful at Easter time.

Serenity – Daniel Carter, composer
Gentle, new age/contemporary piano solo, “Serenity” was composed decades ago by Daniel Carter. It is available at holysheetmusic.com for the first time! Daniel described the circumstances that inspired the music. He writes, “Many years ago, while visiting my parents in rural Idaho, dawning light streamed through the window. As I gazed into the pastures and fields, and saw the expansive, endless sky, there was a complete sense of serenity. Later that day I composed the music.”

A tribute to the early pioneers by composer Wayne Burton. Specific reference to a heroic rescue and answer to prayer during a despirate winter segment of their journey. They video uses this account:
“In November 1856, pioneers in the Martin handcart company were caught by deep snow and cold weather in the mountains of Wyoming. They had already lost many of their members along the way to cold and disease. Starving and fatigued they met the icy Sweetwater river and felt that they could go no further. Grown men sat on the frozen ground and cried with their wives and children.

O Thou In Whose Presence
O Thou In Whose Presence – Robert Strobel, arranger
O Thou in Whose Presence came about as a thought that I’d perhaps arrange a work from Southern Harmony. This hymn was attractive, in that it was very much a proto-typical version of the hymn Redeemer of Israel, which appears in the LDS hymnbook. The melody is less ornamented or slightly different in comparison with the later hymn, and to my liking, the version of this text is also is set in first person. This version I have arranged also has some wonderful and unique sentiments that should be resurrected in song and sung for all to hear. Picking the verses I wanted to use, I attempted to paint the pastoral nature of the text in the second verse, and throughout the work I tried to express the idea of affliction melting away into hope.

Beautiful Zion – Robert Strobel, composer
My setting of George Gill’s “Beautiful Zion” reflects the exciting and celebratory feelings that happen when one thinks about the millennium or Zion. I also envisioned a nod to those who came before us who sacrificed so much (and went so far) for religious freedom. Overall, the setting would thrive in a light conducting style. The melody is lyrical and free flowing and leaps often giving a sense of exultation. While the first two verses are rather upbeat, the final verse is a climax that peacefully concludes into a restful cadence.

This emotionally charged piano solo by Kathleen Holyoak takes you on a musical journey with the Mormon pioneers as they ventured to the West. The opening pleads, “O, Savior, staythis night with me,” with the answer, “All is well, all is well.” The medley continues with melodies from, “Come, Come Ye Saints,” “They the Builders of the Nation,” “Though Deepening Trials,” and concludes in a grand finale with the strains of “O, Zion! Dear Zion! Land of the free, now my own mountain home, unto thee I have come; all my fond hopes are centered in thee” from “O Ye Mountains High.”
This arrangement is also available in SATB and as a piano solo.
A beautifully simple arrangement of this beloved hymn, with an accompaniment that supports the gently flowing musical lines. The arrangement makes use of 2, 3, and 4 parts in shaping the powerful expression of the hymn.

On Earth and in Heaven
On Earth and in Heaven – Janice Kapp Perry, composer; Ann Kapp Andersen, arranger
The author of this hymn text, John V. Pearson, was a scriptorian who truly delighted in the scriptures and understood that the important things of both this life and the next are recorded both on earth and in heaven. In 3 Nephi 23, Nephi brought forth the records and laid them before the Lord, who asked why they had not recorded the words of Samuel regarding events surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection. Nephi remembered that “this thing had not been written” and Jesus commanded that it should be written.
This hymn would certainly be appropriate at Christmas time. Other verses continue and give a broaderoverview of Christ’s mission, which makes the piece appropriate for Easter worship or for any occasionthat celebrates the life and mission of Jesus Christ. The hymn version of this work, with music by Janice Kapp Perry, won the “Award of Distinction” in the Music Submissions of the LDS Church and had it’s premiere performance at the Music Festival in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. This choral arrangement by Ann Kapp Andersen widens its appeal to Christian choirs everywhere

By Acts of Faith
By Acts of Faith – Janice Kapp Perry, composer; Ann Kapp Andersen, arranger
This piece is a masterful treatise on faith beginning with an intriguing description of Jesus walking on the water (in Matthew 14:25-33):
“By acts of faith the heart may know
the truths the eye can’t see.
Where reason fails, the Lord prevails
and walks across the sea.
By acts of faith the spark of hope
is fanned into a flame.
And God will show His miracles
by faith in Jesus’ name.”
