There Is a Green Hill Far Away (Breeze – SATB)
A favorite of the BYU Young Ambassadors, this arrangement is one of composer Garrett Breeze’s best known works. It was commissioned by director Randy Boothe for the fireside “I Believe in Christ” which toured the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and Hong Kong. It was then recorded by Dr. Ronald Staehli as part of the BYU Singers Alumni Hymn Project and released as a free digital download (available at www.singersalumni.com). Most recently, it received honorable mention in the 2013 Sounds of Zion Music Composition Contest among works by other well-known LDS composers. The texture of the piece changes dramatically from verse to verse, reflecting the words being sung. It’s most unique feature (the setting in 5/4 time) is also it’s most challenging. However, this quickly becomes natural and lends a new vibrancy to the familiar tune.
*Note* The third verse is written for a 4-part split in the men. In smaller groups, this may be sung by a quartet, which will greatly reduce the amount of time needed to learn the piece.

What Does Christmas Mean?
What Does Christmas Mean? – Daniel Carter, composer
In 1979, composer Daniel Carter, then a music composition major at university, was forced to sell the piano he inherited to pay tuition. This last resort deal to remain in school included the option for Daniel to buy the piano back, but that opportunity slipped away because of ongoing lack of financial ability. However, during final exams and Christmas season a few months later, his brother, Tim, managed to buy the piano as a Christmas gift for Daniel. As a result, “What Does Christmas Mean?” was composed on Christmas Eve that year and Daniel gave copies of the song as gifts. This story is now a book titled, “Another Christmas Carol”. Exclusively available through HolySheetMusic.com, Daniel’s original hand-drawn manuscript of this lovely, simple vocal solo makes a perfect companion to his book.

Four Canticles for the Christmas Season
“Four Canticles for the Christmas Season” is a collaboration between HolySheetMusic and Lorenz Publishing. We are delighted to present to you this wonderful Christmas Piece!
About the Piece:
Bobette Olson, while a senior at Fairborn Baker High School in Fairborn, Ohio, wrote the lovely text which she asked me to set to music. While an undergraduate voice and choral education major at CCM (University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) I set about working the thematic ideas for the text. At the time, I was singing tenor as part of the CCM Chamber Singers under the direction of Elmer Thomas, a protege of Robert Shaw. The style is clearly influenced by the acappella work that we were doing at CCM at that time, along with some recording that I did with the Whikehart Chorale, under the direction of Lewis Whikehart. This setting by the St. Martin’s Chamber Choir ideally captures most of the nuance of each piece as originally conceived.
The Recording:
“Four Canticles for the Christmas Season” was recorded December 22, 2007 for Christmas with St. Martin’s Chamber Choir at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Denver, Colorado; Timothy J. Krueger, Artistic Director, Ace Edwards, conductor for this particular concert piece.

Lead Kindly Light (Violin Solo – Parkinson)
Kelly Clark-Parkinson has chosen a number of traditional and religious tunes, and she works the material from the inside, never overshadowing the melodies but instead seeking their highest, purest form. Ms. Clark-Parkinson is a tremendous instrumentalist. Here, she serves the material, letting the beauty of the melodies she has chosen take the forefront, rather than spoiling the mood with unnecessary pyrotechnics and flourishes (of which she would certainly be more than capable.) The arrangements aren’t simple or dumbed-down, they are just right.

We Three Kings
This unusual arrangement of one of the most beloved carols, “We three Kings,” arranged by Kathleen Holyoak, evokes mysterious images of the three Magi as they traveled from the East. The underlying rhythmic motive in the bass accompaniment is the heartbeat of the arrangement and represents the motion of the camels and the jingle of camel bells as they saunter slowly through the desert in search of the Christ child in Jerusalem. (Note: Cameleers often put bells on camels at night to prevent them from getting lost.)
“We Three Kings” remains one of the most frequently sung Christmas carols today. This arrangement is suitable for a soloist or a small group singing in unison.

Away in a Manger (Two-part vocal – Leavitt, John)
I love this arrangement of “Away in a Manger” by John C. Leavitt for Two-part vocal, violin and piano. It is just lovely. I was sold on this piece the first time I heard it.
In this moving and tender setting of the favorite Christmas song Away in a Manger, there is a great feeling of love and liberation. The piano part gently flows along like water, the violin climbs and soars in quartal steps, and the two women’s voices lovingly describe the scene of the birth of Christ. Notice that the tone and tempo of the last verse change and become as still and reverent as the prayer that it recites. A simple arrangement, but one that contains a deep and moving spirit. Great for a duet, or a two-part women’s chorus!

Dear Zion! Land of the free, now my own mountain home, unto thee I have come; all my fond hopes are centered in thee” from “O Ye Mountains High.”

Beautiful Savior (Piano Solo – Tonioli)
Beautiful Savior – arr. Jason Tonioli
Of all the traditional Hymns that refer to the Savior, I felt like this one captured the Christmas Spirit. I included this in this Christmas book because it has always reminded me of a lullaby you would sing to a baby. What better way to recognize the baby Jesus, than with this music that was written for Him.
This song is also entitled “Fairest Lord Jesus.” The music and lyrics were written by German Jesuits in the 17th Century and is known as a Silesian folk song. The version most people are familiar with was arranged by Richard S. Willis in 1850.
The music for this song is an Irish folk song entitled, “Slane”. David Evans combined the old Irish text written in the 6th century with the folk melody and it was first published in the 1927 edition of the Church of Scotland’s Hymnary. It is now sung in churches around the world and is widely known as “Be Thou My Vision.”
A popular arrangement of this melody has been performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in which they combine the folk melody Slane, with the text “Take Time to be Holy” which was written by William D. Longstaff.
I decided to include this arrangement in this Christmas book because even though it may not be considered a traditional Christmas carol, the message of a Savior in this song is clear and is certainly fitting for the Christmas Season.

Coventry Carol – arr. Jason Tonioli
The “Coventry Carol” is a Christmas carol dating back to the 16th century. The carol was performed in the city of Coventry, England as part of a mystery play called “The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors.” The play depicted the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew. This carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. The lyrics of this haunting carol represent a mother’s lament for her doomed child. This is the only carol that has survived from this play.

Deck the Halls – arr. Jason Tonioli
“Deck the Halls” is a traditional Yuletide and New Years’ carol. The tune is Welsh, dating back to the sixteenth century, and belongs to a winter carol titled “Nos Galan”. In the eighteenth century, Mozart used the tune for a violin and piano duet. My first introduction to this song came as a kid when I saw the movie “A Christmas Story” and the Chinese Restaurant food servers entertained their guests by singing an out of tune “Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra” to the family in the movie.
I remember thinking this was the funniest thing I had ever heard as a kid.
When I started this arrangement, I wanted to come up with something that was fun and showy to play. I ended up combining the rhythm from my arrangement of Called to Serve. It seemed to fit welll, and this is now one of my favorite pieces to perform during the holidays. Have fun with it, and don’t hesitate to add a few extra notes or jazz it up even more when you play it!

I Wonder as I Wander – arr. Jason Tonioli
This is a Christmas carol written by John Jacob Niles. The carol has its origins in a song fragment collected in 1933 at a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police. In the unpublished autobiography, Niles wrote:
“A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievably dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins…. But, best of all, she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song.”
Based on this girl’s song, Niles wrote this well known tune.

This song is also known as “O Tannenbaum”. It is of German origin. The most well known version was written in 1824 by Leigzig organist, teacher and composer Ernst Anschütz. The melody is an old folk tune. The first known “Tannenbaum” song lyrics date back to 1550.
O Come All Ye Faithful just seemed to fit well with O Christmas Tree. The original tune name is “Adeste Fideles” and is attributed to John Frances Wade. It is one of my favorite hymn tunes. This is a great intermediate piece for those learning to play piano.

Silent Night – Tonioli, Jason
This is one of the all time classic Christmas songs. It was first performed with a guitar accompaniment in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. The text was written by priest Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by Franz Gruber.
The song was also sung simultaneously in French, English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, a song that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.
It’s interesting how music has the ability to bring different cultures together and break down barriers of misunderstanding that in some cases have existed over long periods of time.

A beautiful and simple setting of A.E. Housman’s text, Loveliest of Trees. This setting is for solo voice (Medium High). This solo was composed for Nikki Blackburn, sung on the 2016 Easter Service at the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City.
Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.
Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.
And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

When I Think of You
Daniel Carter
Vocal Solo
When I Think of You
When I Think of You – Daniel Carter, composer
Vocal solo for medium range voice and piano expressing gratitude for parents from a perspective of becoming one. Especially suitable for Mother’s and Father’s Day. Composer Daniel Carter wrote this song after a conversation with his daughter who said to him on his birthday, “I just want you to know I get it. I understand now what it means to be a parent, to worry, to love, to make everything in your life about your children. And I can’t thank you and love you enough for what you’ve done.”
When I was just a child you sat and read to me,
And told me I could do most anything,
Told me be anything that my heart could dream.
It made me smile.
And so I grew and learned, and as I claimed my life,
My stubborn will divided you and I,
And all those words we said were sometimes filled with strife,
And we would cry.
Sunny days could turn to rainy days
When I would storm around when I didn’t get my way.
Sunny days along with rainy days
Can give new meaning to our lives and reason for our ways.
The little notes you wrote that brought those happy smiles,
The pranks you pulled denying all the while,
The endless times that I thought I knew better than you,
How wrong I…
I understand now the sacrifice you made,
How hard it was to do all of the things you did.
I understand now how easy hurt is dealt,
How slow the healing till no more sting is felt.
And when I think of you, I think of sunny days,
The kind that come when rain has gone away,
The kind like when you kissed my tears away,
Those days I…
I understand now how blessed and loved I am.
Those little words we say,
So overused but they are true,
Those little words—I love you.

Lead Kindly Light (Piano Solo – Ward)
Lead Kindly Light – Kay Hicks Ward, arranger
“Lead Kindly Light”: Whether child or adult, the darkness of night or being distant from home can be daunting. This comforting hymn offers sweet assurance that we need not see “…the distant scene”. Every single step in faith inevitably gives way to the morning sun with clearer vision and perspective. This hymn is one of my early favorites.

I Need Thee Every Hour (Piano Solo – Ward)
I Need Thee Every Hour – Kay Hicks Ward, arranger
“I Need Thee Every Hour”: The yearning “…I need thee, oh, I need thee…” is beautifully matched with the melodic contour of the concluding nine measures. The entire hymn overflows with pleading emotion giving ample opportunity for an expressive arrangement for the keyboard. I found this to be challenging to bring forth my need for Him every hour.

The Lord is My Shepherd – Kay Hicks Ward, arranger
“The Lord Is My Shepherd”: Throughout this glorious hymn, dual melodies seem intertwined to more fully express the message of David’s beloved 23rd Psalm. Numerous composers and arrangers have put their own stamp on this beautiful hymn. I hope this arrangement conveys the confidence I feel knowing that, indeed, the Lord is my own Shepherd.

How Can I Keep from Singing (Vocal Solo – Carter)
How Can I Keep from Singing (Vocal Solo) – Dan Carter, arranger
A gentle, building, inspiring setting of Robert Lowry’s beloved hymn, arranged by Daniel Carter. Flute obbligato creates a mood of birds singing with the soloist. Gently building to an inspiring ending with a simple descant on the last verse.
My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth’s lamentation,
I hear the sweet, tho’ far-off hymn
That hails a new creation;
Thro’ all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul—
How can I keep from singing?
What tho’ my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Saviour liveth;
What tho’ the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
Since first I learned to love it,
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his—
How can I keep from singing?
